Greece, including the Ionian Islands rank as a top European destination for digital nomads seeking to balance work and life.  The Ionian Islands offer beautiful landscapes with beaches and mountains, a rich cultural heritage, Mediterranean climate and a laid-back lifestyle in a friendly local community.

Greece’s Digital Nomad Visa

In 2021, the Greek government launched the ‘Digital Nomad Visa’, introducing a straightforward application process that comes with several benefits and allows remote workers to reside and work in Greece for 12 months, with an opportunity to renew

Eligibility and Requirements for the Digital Nomad Visa

Before applying, always verify the latest visa requirements and official guidelines by referring to resources provided by the Greek government.

Applicants must meet specific criteria:

  • Proof of Remote Work: Prove that your work can be performed remotely using technology.
  • Employment Status: Have an employment contract with a non-Greek company or prove you are self-employed with a business registered outside Greece.
  • Income Threshold: Demonstrate a regular income of at least €3,500 per month and if bringing a spouse, this increases to €4,200, or more for dependants.
  • You must be a non-EU citizen
  • Other supporting documents may be required

Application Process:

  • Document Preparation: Essential documents include a valid passport, proof of income, a clean criminal record, health insurance, and a certified health check.
  • Application Submission: Apply at the nearest Greek consulate or embassy in your home country, providing all required documents and paying the necessary fees.
  • Response Wait Time: The Greek Ministry of Migration and Asylum will notify you within 10 days regarding the acceptance or rejection of your visa.
  • Residency Permit Registration: Upon receiving your visa and arriving in Greece, you must register for a residency permit if you plan to extend your stay beyond the visa’s validity.

Financial Implications:

  • Taxation: Unless you spend more than 183 days in Greece, you will not be liable for income tax on Greek-sourced income; otherwise, this would make you a tax resident subject to worldwide income tax.
  • Cost of Living: Compared to its European counterparts, Greece is known for its affordable living costs and excellent healthcare.

Island Life as a Digital Nomad

The Ionian Islands offer a superb quality of life for digital nomads; there is usually access to high-speed internet, a variety of co-working spaces, and a welcoming community of like-minded remote workers.  Across the islands, anyone working remotely can also enjoy a vast range of leisure activities - sailing, swimming, watersports, walking and exploring nature, arts and culture, local food and drink, tavernas, restaurants and harbour-side cafes.

Greece Internet Speed

According to OOKLA, the speed test global index ranks fixed broadband in Greece at 97, along with mobile internet which is currently ranked at 28.

If you’re staying in on the Ionian Islands for several months, consider getting a sim with a decent data package and using your mobile hotspot when you work.

Best Mobile Network in Greece

It is simple enough to set up your mobile phone for moving to Greece, these include buying a prepaid sim card or getting a mobile contract.

If you are travelling to and staying on an island or more remote areas the mobile providers - Vodafone, Wind, and Cosmote will provide the best coverage.

Of course, there are areas where mobile phone service will be intermittent, or you may experience no service at all.  Across the Greek islands and if you based somewhere remote, it is worth checking the 4G coverage of your destination before choosing a mobile data provider.

The best thing about working remotely from the Ionian Islands is that you can sit back with a coffee at home or in a cafe, enjoy the view and work at your own pace when you choose.
