A project costing almost 100 million euros has been awarded to Fulgor part of the Hellenic Cable company to deliver a turnkey contract including the design, supply and installation of two submarine cables. This will strengthen the electrical power for Kefalonia, Lefkada, and Zakynthos to ensure reliable energy for the Ionian Islands.
The Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO) has approved the deal that will boost the energy power supply and improve reliability in the Ionian Islands with the upgrades of the Kefalonia-Zakynthos and Lefkada-Kefalonia electrical interconnections.
The total length of the Kefalonia – Zakynthos electrical interconnection will be 20.4 km and that of Lefkada – Zakynthos will be 14.8 km and will completely replace the existing connections that have been in operation for decades. The project will install a new integrated underwater and underground cable system with 150kV high voltage alternating current technology will also incorporate fibre telecommunication cables.
It is estimated that the project will take up to 12 months once contracts have been officially signed with completion in 2025.
Theodoros Skylakakis, Minister of Environment and Energy, commented:
"The upgrades of the Kefalonia-Zakynthos and Lefkada-Kefalonia electrical interconnections, utilising new technologies, are yet another important energy project for the improvement of infrastructure in the Ionian Islands region.
From its implementation, the residents of the area, as well as tourists, will enjoy the benefits of a more modern and durable electrical system.”
