Greece boasts around 6000 islands and islets and among those lie the Ionian islands to the west side surrounded by their trademark turquoise waters and a picturesque coastline with a natural green landscape. Few would disagree that there is no better way to navigate and visit the Greek islands than by boat.

The Ionian Islands offer sailors of all levels of experience a wonderful opportunity to explore the cosmopolitan life of the Eptanissa – Greek for ‘Seven Islands’.  The sailing season starts in May and runs until October with July and August being the hottest and busiest months when more visitors and holidaymakers arrive.

Climatic conditions differ from the islands in the Aegan. The Ionian has a gentle wind called the Bora which comes up early on a summer morning and reaches a maximum force of 4-5 and then dies down in the evening once you are likely to have moored up.  The Ionian’s calm waters, warm weather and relatively low sea depth are ideal for less experienced sailors and popular with beginners and families.  In fact, Lefkada is labelled the sailing capital of Greece and its packed harbour is proves the point.

When it comes to choosing your type of boat for sailing around the Ionian islands, it comes down to personal preference – you may opt for a luxury yacht or a catamaran, depending on the size of your party, and of course your budget if chartering rather than using your own boat.  The Ionian islands are known for their safe waters which make for a relaxing experience, whether you take on the role of skipper yourself or hire a qualified skipper with local knowledge to make sure you see everything the islands have to offer.

One of the big advantages of sailing around the north and south Ionian is the short distance between the islands with their traditional harbours, vibrant towns and pretty villages.  This means less need to plan or stick to a strict schedule and more time to take your time discovering unspoiled coves, endless bays, local tavernas, great restaurants and beautiful sights across the ancient Ionian islands.
