When we think of the Greek islands it’s impossible not to imagine stretches of fine sandy beaches with the clear water glistening in the sunshine and gently lapping onto the shore. To the west of mainland Greece, the Ionian Islands form the sea border with Italy and boast some of the best beaches against a backdrop of cliffs covered in a natural green landscape.

1. Corfu - Paleokastritsa

Paleokastritsa is the most famous beach on the west coast of Corfu. Above the picturesque village is the hilltop landmark Paleokastritsa Monastery. In the height of the summer the place is busy, but along from the main beach are some lovely small coves perfect for a secluded swim, snorkelling and scuba diving in the clear blue waters. Paleokastritsa has a small port from where you can take a boat to explore remote beaches and caves. Enjoy watching beautiful sunsets on the waterfront at a local bar or taverna. Also, to the west and not to be missed is Agios Gordis beach, which lies in a large bay where the seawater appears as a unique blue-green from the green cliffs that surround it.

2. Zakynthos - Navagio

Naviago beach can be found on the northern side of Zakynthos and is only accessible by boat. An old shipwreck remains on the white sandy shore and this is where the beach gets its name ‘Navagio’ which means shipwreck. This beach is often ranked as one of the world’s most beautiful and regularly features in travel guides and magazines. and

3. Kefalonia – Myrtos

Myrtos is Kefalonia’s most well-known beach, known for its spectacular backdrop of dramatic rugged cliffs and a shoreline covered in white pebbles and clear waters. The beach with a small cave is popular with families and children.
A visit to Antisamos beach on eastern part of the island with its blue-green water and hillside is not to be missed. Scenes from Captain Corelli’s Mandolin were filmed here.

4. Lefkada – Porto Katsiki

Renowned for its wonderful true-blue water, Porto Katsiki means ‘port of the goats’ and is Lefkada’s most famous beach surrounded by rugged cliffs to the south-west of the island. Boats sail from Nydri port to Porto Katsiki. Another large sandy beach on Lefkada is Egremni which is reached by steps and has amazing views from high up on the cliff-top. The beach has a bar, sunbeds and parasols, but the larger part is less commercial and more relaxing away from the crowds.

5. Lefkada – Agios Ioannis

The perfect beach for watersport lovers, Agios Ionnis is the island’s most popular location for kitesurfing and windsurfing, close to Lefkada Town. It has a good breeze from midday that makes it ideal for wind sports and you can hire equipment from many places along the beach. wind and watersports.
