Your first impression of delightful Gaios, the capital of Paxos in the Ionian Islands, will be from the ferry arriving from Corfu or mainland Greece, or by private boat.  Either way, you will first be greeted by the imposing Agios Nikolaos Islet with its Venetian fortress and then struck by the lovely view of the traditional bustling harbour, colourful waterfront dotted with tavernas and cafes that look out across the waters of this historic town.

From the ferry it’s a 15-minute walk into the centre of Gaios where narrow twisty streets take you to pretty squares and glimpses of the Ionian Sea.

  1. Statue of Georgios Anemogiannis

As you enter the harbour, you can see the Statue of Georgios Anemogiannis, a brave local hero from the Greek War of Independence.  It reflects the importance of Paxos historically in the wider context of Greece’s history.

  1. Agios Nikolaos Islet

You can visit Agios Nikolaos by boat – a short trip takes you to the ruins of the 15th century Venetian fortress – a reminder of the Italian influence that remains visible in and around Gaios. Paxos occupied a strategic po sition and the fortress offered far-reaching views across the Ionian Sea to prevent the island from pirate attacks.

  1. Analipsi Church

Standing in the heart of Gaios, this church is a fine example of traditional Greek Orthodox architecture.  Inside, its ornate frescoes and mesmerising icons reflect the religious and spiritual importance of this building.

  1. Folklore Museum

Discover lots about local culture and history at the small Folklore Museum in Gaios. A collection of artifacts, photographs, and traditional costumes provide an insight into the everyday life and traditions of Paxos over centuries.

  1. Rent a Boat

One of the best ways to explore the Ionian Islands is by boat and Gaios offers four boat rental companies if you do not have your own vessel.  Paxos is blessed with hidden bays and beaches; for an adventure why not sail across to the sister island of Antipaxos.  Here, you will discover glorious unspoiled beaches Vrika and Voutoumi, with their distinctive turquoise waters.

  1. Visit the Blue Caves

Situated on the west coast, the Blue Caves are a natural wonder of Paxos and the Ionian Islands.  They are only accessible by boat - either your own or via an organised tour, where you can enjoy exploring, swimming and snorkelling.

  1. Walks, Flora and Fauna

Leading out from Gaios are many nature walks that will lead you through ancient olive groves, authentic little villages such as Ozias, offer breath-taking panoramic views of both the Ionian Sea and verdant countryside full of indigenous trees, flora and fauna.

  1. Gaios is for Gastronomy

Whether you’re a gastro-gourmet or a full-on foodie, Gaios offers an eatery for everyone to satisfy all palettes. It’s got relaxed Greek tavernas, chic waterfront restaurants, cosy local bakeries and buzzy cafes.  What they all do is draw on the local culinary produce and seafood of Paxos - the land and the sea, to bring heaps of flavour, traditional recipes and seasonal cooking to the table – from grilled octopus to homemade moussaka and generous meze.

  1. Bars and the only nightclub on Paxos

There’s an infinite choice of bars in Gaios.  The seafront bars offer sophisticated cocktails and views across the bay.  Heading into the town, there are many lounge bars and artisan breweries with a relaxed vibe, music and interesting local wines and beers to try. There are livelier bars for a party atmosphere with music.  Gaios is home to the island’s only true nightclub - this is the place for late night dancing until 2am with great DJs and high-octane energy.

  1. Neroladia Festival

At the end of July or sometimes the beginning of August, Gaios hosts the ‘Neroladia’ festival. This festive event includes open-air music from orchestras and traditional Ionian dancing, people are offered free bread accompanied by olives, tomatoes, feta, and wine. It is a celebratory occasion honouring the island’s cultural heritage and traditions to bring together the entire local community.
