Villa Aegis

A recently built and architecturally distinctive stone villa, set within a 7,000 sqm private estate on the scenic Northeast coast of Corfu, 

Villa Aegis is nestled within an extensive olive grove in the countryside between Acharavi and Roda, in one of the most secluded pockets of the island's coastline and is within walking distance to an attractive beach.

The villa was designed by the award-winning architectural practice Urban Soul Project and completed in 2021. The design draws on the archetypal structure of traditional Corfiot barn houses, with three interconnected stone buildings arranged around an enclosed courtyard.

The main building is double height with a gabled roof and houses the open plan living, dining and kitchen area. Adjoining this is a two-storey building containing the bedrooms, with an independent ground floor guest house completing the composition.

Locally sourced materials have been used throughout, including stone for the construction and flooring, coloured plaster in warm earthen tones, exposed wooden roof beams, panelled wooden shutters and a mosaic tile floor in the colours of the earth.

Interior

The heart of the villa is the spacious open plan living area, with a striking double-height vaulted ceiling and large arched steel-framed doors leading out to the terraces. A separate snug sitting room with a working fireplace offers a more intimate retreat.

There are five generously sized double bedrooms, each with its own en-suite bathroom, featuring soft terracotta tadelakt walls, arched recesses and fitted timber joinery. Each bedroom opens onto either a private balcony or terrace, with views over the surrounding olive grove. The upper floor benefits from a first-floor terrace, offering an elevated outdoor space looking out across the estate.

Outdoor living

The enclosed back courtyard is the core of the house, with a pergola-covered outdoor kitchen, barbeque and dining area, framed by hand-laid stone walls and a mature olive tree at its centre.

To the front of the villa, the elongated 20m x 5m swimming pool runs the length of the property, finished in a soft sub-green tone, and is complemented by a jacuzzi and a covered stone lounge area.

The Estate

The 7,000 sqm estate is home to over 100 organic, oil-producing olive trees, many of them more than 150 years old, along with a vineyard and a variety of fruit-bearing trees including apple, pear, orange, lemon and chestnut. The gardens have been thoughtfully landscaped to retain the character of the original grove whilst introducing further Mediterranean planting.

A short walk takes you to the serene sandy beach of Bitzikou.

Olive Oil Business

The estate's olive grove is in active organic production, with the annual harvest cold pressed into the estate's own olive oil. Many of the trees are over 150 years old, and combined with the vineyard and fruit trees, the grounds give Villa Aegis a strong agricultural identity.
