Pomegranates are traditionally a sign of good luck, prosperity and health for the new year.
Look closely at the shape of a pomegranate and you cannot help but notice that they are shaped like a Christmas bauble. In Greece there is a tradition of hanging pomegranates on the door at Christmas much like we hang holly wreaths. At this time of year, the pomegranate is very ripe and opens with the slightest touch. On New Year’s Day, on the way back home from church, Greek families would take the fruit and smash it hoping that good fortune would follow in the year ahead.
